The evil presence in the film moves fromperson to person, and there is a chase scene in a crowd that is eerilyeffective, because there's no way to tell who the pursuer is. When Hobbes mentions the name to Gretta, she gravely advises him to drop the case to protect his life and family. Hobbes, in voiceover, reminds the viewer this is the story of how he almost died, revealing that he is really Azazel. Azazel boasts to Hobbes that even if his current host body is killed, he can transfer to any new host body in the surrounding area, without even needing to touch them. Thestory develops along the lines of a police procedural, with the copsinvestigating some strange murders, including a corpse left in a bathtub whilethe killer apparently enjoyed a leisurely breakfast. To provoke Hobbes, Azazel possesses his nephew Sam and attacks John's brother Art in their home. However, she reconsiders after a terrifying encounter with a man on the street. Hobbes then takes his nephew to Gretta's house, to keep him safe.
There is a connection between all these threads, which wediscover along with Hobbes. John Hobbes is convinced that when killer Edgar Reese is executed, all of his troubles are over.
